We won’t ever know who invented an actual game, he told the audience. We’re going to do better, I think.

With help from the UESPWiki community and other online users, the project was successfully rolled out to the public last year, with millions of people in the U.K. and other Eastern European countries playing it. It was played a thousand times over.

The project will now be moved into a lab at the Institute for Simulation Research, where the researchers will study how a player takes the game to high-stakes levels. This experiment is about simulation, not actual playing, explained Ian Brown, lead author of the original simulation project and a researcher at University College London, who has written five scientific papers on the subject.

It’s been really rewarding to have such a close collaboration between simulations and the wider community of people who care, he said, adding that the group had already created tools to help players play the game.

Brown did not name the researchers, other than having been involved in both the realistic simulation of a person’s mind (seen here and here) and the simulated simulation of a person’s reaction if they were playing a game against other people. However, Brown called it an important discovery for future work.

This is a first step, and this research will have implications on how we try to make a game that’s playing that the other players don’t like and we can then use the power of the machine to show what we’ve learned, Brown said.

The team worked on its simulations on the basis of a modified version of Microsoft’s version of Kinect, said Dr. Brian Healey, professor of neuroscience at the School of Visual Arts and Sciences at the University of Manchester.

Because the game uses data from computer vision, but uses a computer-generated world, Dr. Healey said more work needs to be done before the data can be used for gameplay, but it is likely by the end of the semester that we will have a better grasp of what the real game is like to play, which could have a big impact in the future, he added.

The game uses a number of algorithms that are not terribly sophisticated in design, he said. It may be difficult to explain, but I doubt it.
