Dirty as all the things we’ve told you all about the state of the art in video games is there really is no real way for a game to be developed in an era as modern as ours to make it happen. We need a game, we can build it and we can build it from scratch.

But it turns out that’s not the case. A few years ago a game I worked on, The Last Action Hero, was being developed in Japan called Shingeki no Koukai. I worked with the team at the Japanese game company Nintendo on creating a video game that we called The Last Action Hero, while at the same time working closely with the Nintendo of America to develop that game. My first attempt at the game came out in early 2006. In 2008, I finally decided to start working on the game I was working on.

How many years did it take for that development to happen

I was working on it for about six months. It was pretty far from its release date though so it was mostly development and design. It was the longest period of time between I getting the game to development and the end of it.

Were you happy with the game’s release dates

I wasn’t really happy with it. All my best friends were working on it. I still don’t know what else I was talking about, but the game was a really great opportunity for me. It’s something I will take on and continue to do and I will continue to do so for generations.

So even though you don’t look like a typical Japanese gamer, are Japanese gamers actually a better fit for video game development

In any case, every time I ask a game development question, it’s been a huge learning curve. From the very beginning of making my games into actual video games that I was really interested in learning about, I’ve learned a lot from all of it.

I didn’t realize in just a single or two years of learning that this could happen to anybody. I have a passion for making videogames, for me that started with getting some kind of inspiration from real games because all the people who are still playing them are very creative and all the people who have really embraced the genre are so excited to be part of the game industry.

Are you worried about the future of indie video game development with the Nintendo of America

I am very worried. I am very upset they have lost their ability to be successful in this space
