The next step, however, would be to test some of these water-treatment technology to see if any water contamination has surfaced in some part of the U.S. The federal government has begun to consider a number of ways this could happen, including testing bottled groundwater by using water sources with higher risk of contamination, and testing those taps.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has found contamination in about 15 billion gallons of aquifers worldwide, but this figure is not to the degree the EPA had wanted to. The problem, they’ve discovered, is that groundwater is actually too salty and too acidic for any bacteria that might be present to penetrate, causing severe, permanent damage to the organisms that grow in the groundwater that is actually used in the plants that produce the drinking water.
This is the first step toward the use of the high-quality drinking water we are using, where the health impacts are very low, said Jim McPherson, director of the Center for Environmental Health at the University of Oregon, who is working with the EPA on the project.
Municipal Drinking Water Act
In July 2013, the U.S. EPA adopted the municipal drinking water act, which governs the use and use of water in municipal facilities, which is meant to provide a safe, sanitary, and sustainable drinking water supply for everyone.
