What’s been happening in Russia, I believe on many levels, is a result of an effort by the Obama administration and its Washington allies to prevent other countries from acting against their own interests in the same way they are now about to take up the issue of whether we should have the right to use force in Syria. They have now engaged in the same strategy in Syria. And what this really will do is cause a political revolution which is about as important as a revolution in Tunisia or in Libya in the 1990s.

So, the Russians are in a bit of a dilemma. They haven’t responded with sufficient force to force the Syrian revolution to fall, and, on the contrary, they have had a lot of good intentions. They have been very effective in undermining the U.S. foreign policy in Syria. One of the things that’s interesting about the Russians is that they have been very active in Syria. They’ve been active in opposing Assad for far longer than his government existed before this war started. And they’ve been active in creating a situation in which the United States and its allies can do whatever they wanted with regard to Syria on the basis of the principles that are very important to them and their interests.
