Barry Shilling has resigned as national director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest and announced he would not be returning to Congress next year after he became embroiled in a lawsuit from conservative groups over his funding of a Planned Parenthood clinic in El Salvador.

Shilling will remain as public policy director from the beginning, but he will not be on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for a time, House Rules Committee Chairman Greg Walden R-Ore told reporters on Friday afternoon.

The announcement comes just two days after Shilling took to Twitter to say he would no longer be on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and that he had been forced to resign by the group’s leadership, saying that the leadership’s actions are not correct. They should not be taking place at this time.

Shilling’s resignation came just days after the Houston Astrodome was closed down by a bomb threat following the massacre at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Dallas. Shilling served as the head of the American Institute for Regenerative Medicine, also known as the American Regenerative Medicine Foundation, when he stepped down from that position after five years as public policy director. And after a controversial 2011 Senate campaign for president when he accused President Barack Obama of being a liar for defunding Planned Parenthood and threatening to impose sanctions on a pro-life organization under the Affordable Care Act.

At the time of his resignation, Shilling told CNBC’s Face the Nation that the only people who are actually in control of the Center for Biological Diversity are Planned Parenthood and the pro-life folks.

I don’t know when Obama will finally release his budget, Shilling told CNBC. This is an incredible day, and I will take it as a challenge over the next two weeks.

Shilling is best-known as a contributor to Mother Jones and Daily Kos he also had been with the group Truthout for 14 years.
