I had the opportunity to visit the newly renovated downtown Atlanta Community House at 518 E. S. Main Street yesterday and I immediately thought about it. I walked in and came with a huge, gorgeous view of the downtown skyline. I was looking at the city skyline, then I came upon the massive and beautiful Central Avenue bridge. This was in my mind in 2014. When I reached down to put my hand on it a bit, it reminded me of Atlanta, or perhaps it was my grandfather’s idea about Atlanta. I’m not sure.
So this bridge is where every city has its own story. There’s the Eastside, where I grew up in Atlanta and I’ve lived there for many years, but to go up to the city again in this day and age, there must be some connection. It’s kind of like that, or it must have existed in Atlanta, because the city has no story to tell about Atlanta. But I think it’s very important, as an Atlantaer and the creator of the city, that we have a good connection with everything we do. We all get along as if we’re living together in an amazing place, and that’s wonderful, but it’s hard to do that in an Atlanta suburb.
I had a very hard time coming to grips with a lot of the symbolism in the city we live in, and I think they had something like a sense of pride in that, as well. We came in with a sense of gratitude, but at the same time, they felt like they needed it, and they wanted to have some sort of connection to the city.
There are people here who come here in a lot of different ways and it’s difficult to know what kind of relationship the city has, so this is really great for me and for everyone. It was great to see all the amazing people coming here today, and now that I’m
