A Canadian military veteran who went missing for over 11 years has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of the second degree murder of a Canadian military officer.

The 37-year-old victim’s father, John F. Fife pleaded guilty after the Crown asked for a reduction on sentence because of his own criminal record.

It’s like he went from being an alcoholic to a drug addict. It’s such an enormous responsibility to go after somebody, John F. Fife, the father of 19-year-old Joshua Fife, said at a news conference last week.

I would like to think I won a lot of these trials and it is something the Canadians have been doing. I hope I can do more people a good service.

Fife’s family has been in touch through social media posts and messages from the outside world, Fife family said in a statement last week.

The Canadian military said it is investigating Fife’s disappearance and will provide updates on his whereabouts with the Crown in its review of the charges brought against him.

We are not going to speculate on why he chose an offence, because it’s clear there could have been a lot of other factors, but we don’t condone it, said the military.

Fife also pleaded guilty to one count of first degree murder, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

After sentencing, the judge said it was very possible there may be a second trial in Canada.

Fife has been charged with second degree murder in the disappearance of Joshua Fife, a 26-year-old Canadian citizen who was last seen in Edmonton on August 16, 2011.

The Crown has argued Fife’s death was accidental or accident, and Fife was a member of a force and not an individual of a particular type that was involved.
