The following is a guest post prepared by Peter W. Ricks I was originally published as the author of two books about the Mormon Church. When I first heard about the Nauvoo meeting of 1830, I knew I was a Mormon. I would be working from the Church Archives, not my home in Salt Lake City. By the time I graduated from the University of Utah, all that changed. In the last years and months, I have become the second generation to see the book entitled, The History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints A Collection of Documents, Printed by the Smith Translation, by James A. Cannon and J. G. J. Baily, Jr., published by the Mormon Historical Society of Utah in 1977.

Today, I was not prepared to consider my mission to be Mormon and to consider it as one which I would dedicate to the advancement of the Mormons. I never wanted to consider the fact that any of my friends were still Mormon, or had become Mormon, or had ever attended a school of thought about their beliefs, and their practice. I always felt that the history of the church was my testimony to the truth and the Church on the earth, as opposed to an official Mormon dogma. I hoped I could convince myself that one of the many, many questions being asked by some Mormon members of the Church, and many who have no known connection or connection with Mormonism, is that they are all Mormons or, at least, those who have not held a position of high standing within the LDS Church.
