A new study shows that the most important factors in reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking, and cigarette smoking.
The study by researchers from the University of Chicago says that the importance of alcohol in stopping Alzheimer’s is almost certainly higher among smokers than among those who are not drinking alcohol. But the study finds, the link might not always be obvious, and that the relationship may still become more complicated
A new study by researchers from the University of Chicago shows that the most important factors in reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s are usually alcohol consumption - and tobacco smoke.
It suggests the idea could be a very important part of any therapy against Alzheimer’s - if all that is known it could be useful - not only on behalf of patients and doctors. The team surveyed 1,500 people on a computerized version of the Alzheimer Risk Factor Surveillance System.
The subjects were asked How well did you drink How did you drink during the past 10 or 12 months What cigarette was you smoking In each individual answer, the researchers wrote about how well the person had used certain drugs or had used a particular substance that had been linked to Alzheimer disease.
The results of the study were released May 12.
Dr. Robert Schiller, associate professor of general medicine at UChicago, said researchers have long known that drinking alcohol does make people less likely to have Alzheimer’s, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that alcohol use could be a risk factor. The question is, what about that other risk factor that will increase one’s risk of Alzheimer’s, to some extent he said.
The study looked at the risk of developing Alzheimer’s from age 70 to 62, by age, sex, race and ethnicity. It then looked at the number of people who had previously died from Alzheimer’s or stroke.
The researchers found that both men and women who consumed alcohol had an increased risk of Alzheimer’s, as well as for any of four factors smoking, alcohol use, smoking-related diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. Those who consumed alcohol during the previous 10 years were more likely to have an increased risk of Alzheimer’s than those who not drank at all. Both men and women who drank for longer had an increased risk of Alzheimer’s.
