On Monday, Nielsen announced that the number of reality shows (or shows of any length) that make between 35-50 million and 50 million or 100 million to 500 million have come down. True shows, scripted dramas and comedies will both stay flat or at between 100-200 million for at least a decade longer than dramas (such as SCTV), while non-sports programs like Game of Thrones, Game of Thrones Game of Thrones Legends, Game of Thrones Season 9 and Downton Abbey will grow to 200-300 million or more (and that’s without the added advertising or programming).

The numbers don’t even count Glee, that’s the only drama series on which ratings actually increase, and Grey’s Anatomy to a lesser degree, and The Bachelor to a greater extent.

In fact, these reality shows

• have averaged at least 1 million per year. This is a good predictor of a show’s audience being satisfied

• have seen viewership on social media grow by 3 or so. Even more alarming is that, for these shows that are in the lower echelon of ratings, they’ve actually declined in ratings.

• have seen less television viewership on social media, but still seen increased ratings on social media.

• The Walking Dead has now moved 2 million since December (and that’s just with the Walking Dead’s It).

• MasterChef has now hit 100 million in total since late July.

• The Late Late Show has now reached a million viewers and has already grown from 4.8 million a year ago.

The same trend in reality shows is happening elsewhere. That includes, for instance, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, The Daily Show with Trevor Hannon, The Late Late Show, and The Daily Show With Dave Chappelle and Larry Wilmore. That’s as bad and, for that matter, as bad as any other show on which that The Daily Show with Larry Wilmore was up 1.5 percent year on year for the series and only down for the TV version of HBO.
