The easiest way to gauge whether a horse is in competitive order with other horses is to look at their current performance. These are, on average, higher than everyone else, so that’s good. Horses that are competitive with their rivals are more likely to be faster, so we measure that.

Does the horse outperform other horses

No, this is a subjective answer, and there are quite limited answers here. But let’s say that we go to a track track and say, ‘Oh, you see that you beat this horse, right’ You might say, ‘Oh, wow, that’s a great experience’ But if you look at the numbers, you know that there is almost no difference in the average performance we might be seeing versus many horses. The average performance we see against good horses is a little bit higher than some horses. We don’t know whether these differences account for the results that the horses did or not, but then what makes them different is how easily they’re matched up on these performance measurements.

Does it matter if you’re in an early or late start

To me, this is a bit of a misjudgment. There was a time where we had guys that came up behind all of the other horses on track at 50 miles per hour, so by that metric it was almost meaningless. It’s not like they weren’t running at a fairly decent pace. That’s fine. But to me, it’s about performance versus consistency.

If we take the average performance of these teams, you might say that their performance versus the average performance is very close and that if you are looking at their average performance this is just because this is what they are doing. That’s not the case. The average performance of the top half of these teams at 50 miles per hour is the same. It’s the same to me.
