A former Democratic president of New Mexico made an unexpected visit to the White House that also surprised both the president and the secretary. The two spoke by telephone, although they would not discuss details of the visit, nor did they discuss his wife’s pregnancy, which they say they have never met. Instead, they discussed his political position in Washington and his long history in politics.

The vice presidential pick of New Mexico’s new Republican governor, Steven Trenberth, was in Washington last week for an event on a policy-making forum and his wife is a board member of the Center for Public Integrity, which focuses on illegal abortion.

The governor’s announcement last week that he was leaving the Democratic Party came days after President Trump signed a executive order prohibiting travel from 60 nations to travel to the United States. The executive order prohibits individuals from seven predominately Muslim countries from entering the nation. He said the order could be used against terrorists working for those nations. He signed it, said the governor, without any prior approval from all 50 states.

Trump’s travel ban, which he has already said would apply only to people the United States had previously designated as a terrorism source, was welcomed by many Republicans, who say he is a reasonable person to deal with any situation. New Mexico’s Republican governor, Steve Montoya, told a panel Tuesday that Trump had gone back to what he meant when he said, ‘We have a right to be respectful of our citizens’ that we had the right to protect each other and to have their own opinions.’
