The government of Sri Lanka has been forced to suspend its national anthem protests because of national security concerns.

About 1,500 people staged a sit-in earlier this month outside Colombo, in response to anti-colonial protests.

It is the largest sit-in event in Sri Lanka’s history.

The current protests will only reinforce concerns of security concerns. This is especially troubling given the recent actions of a high-level Cabinet Minister and a number of top officers of Ministry of Information on the protest in Colombo, the government’s press office, Sri Lanka Affairs, said in a statement on Wednesday.

In light of the recent decisions by the Cabinet Minister of Information and the military leadership that the country is a closed-government system where all political parties need to remain at the same level, it is regrettable that a large number of people on these protests are being harassed.

We feel it is necessary to ask the Minister of Information to step forward to take urgent action to protect the security and national interest of Colombo.

Government spokesperson, Prakash Bhatt, said it was very difficult to make any statements now, at least as stated in the statement and to speak up about an incident which occurred here in Sri Lanka, adding that a team of security advisors from the Department of Communications worked to monitor the situation. But he noted the government would also urge all people to remember that this will not be the last.

The South African government has not yet formally informed the government of the situation at the Ministry of Communications. The government does not have the responsibility to explain the situation. It does not have to clarify the issues at the moment.

The National Security Advisor told reporters from Cape Town that no details had been sent to him, and he could not confirm how long the occupation had been in force.
