I’m currently working on a documentary on a school district in Massachusetts that has recently instituted an anti-discrimination policy. It’s an effort to ensure that members of a community feel free from discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, and also ensures that there is a safe space where people can participate in conversations about these subjects or about the issues.

I’m writing this story specifically around the recent election of Donald Trump as head of the Department of Education, which in the process has had to confront its own internal and external failings in hiring, hiring, and hiring in its student body. It has not been easy for me to find a person who was able to speak openly about a very controversial subject, a topic which resonates with me in my own personal life. I’m concerned that in our educational system especially on campus people will think differently when dealing with a subject that might have such an impact on their own life or on their friends.

For those of you reading this wondering about how this impacts me, here’s my response.

I believe many students will find this important in their school years. If you are a student there, you are likely to feel that I have a responsibility, in your student life, to ensure that the diversity and inclusion we offer students is inclusive, and not just a one-size-fits-all approach. When I hear from students who support my actions as your teacher or who support a specific student, I find it very important to have a clear, strong statement of what I believe in and my job.

This means you can make significant comments and concerns before your discussion with me. If you see something you disagree with, or if a particular student feels you have a role to play in my decisions, you can reach out.

The one-size-fits-all approach to diversity and the one we should be investing in in our educational system is going to be one that students learn from and will continue to learn over time as they learn the value of diversity and inclusion in our system.
