In a post titled No More Money (And More Credit), How Do I Pay More for the First Time (and at an interview in The Wall Street Journal), producer Brian Hochschild talks about the impact that studio and director salaries have on an audience. Here’s what he wrote about how he thinks there actually is more money in filmmaking

I believe it’s still in the 50 to 60 range, which has made a lot of changes under different times. As you probably know, that’s where most things get the most attention. You could get paid as high as 600-650 to go to the festival, but more studios will do that for you now. I don’t think there’s any reason why a lot of studios have taken a less generous approach to making films.

I believe it is about the fact that you have a lot of different options for distribution if you are going overseas, or working on the new year. More budgets may not be the most efficient way to reach more people, but they are probably also more profitable. So as filmmakers we often get a lot of different opinions on what’s good and what’s OK. So I think studios that are big and profitable tend to put more thought into getting a really good deal, whether it be the budget, whether it be how the money will be used, etc., and more of a decision is made about which one to make. I don’t just mean that the amount of money you get from being paid lower wages and less funding, though. There’s a lot of different ways you can make money. I think making more money is better for you because you are making those more direct-to-video films, but it also pays more for a distribution person or distributor to produce more of them, and therefore you are more likely to be working with younger, cheaper, more experienced people to make that kind of income to their budget.
