I can’t speak for anyone else for too many reasons. My role has been to tell my audience what I believe they believe. If it is really important, then people listen. If it is not really important then people do not listen. I think about myself as an outsider or a self-made individual who was born in the middle of nowhere. It’s important to show how amazing the place looks in all of its different varieties of vibrant colors, how unique the people in this neighborhood make their homes. Those people are those people. It’s their lives that shape who they are.

How are you dealing with your own identity as a filmmaker

I don’t think I can be the filmmaker myself. The way I look at a person can affect what is about them and the story they are telling. It’s not my job. But my job is to tell stories that have character and truth, both within and beyond my own personal circumstances. I want to be honest with other people. I take responsibility for my choices, and I don’t use them to manipulate any. But I look at the world in a similar way as I do my business. I look at my surroundings in which people live, which people live in, and which people do what they think they should do.

For what it is, you don’t use the words professional or independent often enough to convey your true vision.

I just say what I believe about myself in the best possible way as a person. That’s all it is. I’m a professional. I’m not trying to be the director of a documentary.

If you were to take the money that you receive from your work and hand it to someone who doesn’t have any money whatsoever, is that okay, or should that just be treated differently

I am so proud of my work, and I appreciate it. It’s a privilege to be able to give back. Everyone is entitled to their own money. It’s a privilege that no one will be able to control. And we all have something to contribute. But I am so privileged to say that there really is something special going on with what comes out of your work. So this is my very own unique ability to say what I want to say but at the same time you might want to be more open and you might even want me to say the right thing.
