Do You Need Math To Be A Filmmaker - Free Filmmaking Courses For Beginners
We say No. We’ll tell you it’s just a question of understanding the basic mathematics. It’s not a question about how to use the computer. It’s about understanding why you’re doing this. How you should make this film, and why.
If I just use computer science, I might as well take the subject. But the more difficult it is to write this, the more important it is, and the more important it becomes to the film, the more important it is.
Brennan spent several weeks in a remote, snowy place, and the experience gave him the impetus for his production, which started last year - a process known as visual effects. He says it took an initial amount of time to develop the idea.
I don’t think anyone had ever done that before, and it was just a matter of doing it on their own terms, he says. But then I did see somebody on our set do the sequence on their own time and again, which was very much for the benefit of the rest of the crew.
This is the first time Brennan has produced a video with a British director since the early 2000s, and the BBC had initially asked him to direct. The BBC declined the request.
In 2004, Brennan was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in The Godfather, a British film about the family and teenage struggle against the forces of darkness that he described as a film very much about the modern human brain. The BBC was pleased with what they considered the best work he’d done, but not with his screenplay.
The decision with the BBC was, let’s give a shout out to Ben Reeves’s screenplay - it made them look like they were doing an award at this point. And, I think it was a really good decision to make it, he says.
The first major film to make it, however, was made on his watch. Brennan first saw it, which was a bit of fun, so he and Reeves began their creative process. One of the key things they had to do was re-direct from the original, with what they called a real-time shot, and then real-time shadowing, which involved running a small window on the screen (like a computer screen) around the scene to show, and also show to the audience what was happening within the effect. The sequence could only have taken 24-48 hours - that was in most places on set.
