The United States has already raised 1 billion for a possible military strike against Syria that looks relatively simple. As of December, it had pledged about 1.1 billion and had agreed to provide 1 billion to be used to support the military campaign through January 2017. That means the Pentagon has committed over 100 million to a plan to use that money to assist the Syrian government with the establishment and security of an inclusive regime which will allow democratic rights to be respected.

In a piece written over the weekend by The Intercept’s Josh Goldin, the White House called for the United States to support a military strike against a key target in the country in the run-up to and during the Syria crisis. There is strong evidence to this effect. Goldin says US officials believe that it could involve the sale of arms and support to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, or use them to conduct an intelligence gathering operation against Syrian rebels in Syria. Given the current uncertainty in the situation in Syria, the administration might need to decide to go this route.

Goldin calls for the United States to support a democratic regime. It’s likely to involve arming rebels from the West and other countries that believe in the rule of law
